Tulare, Tulare County
The Southern Pacific founded Tulare in 1872 and kept its valley headquarters here until 1891. The town is named for the tule reeds that once fringed Tulare Lake to the west. Bob Mathias, who won the Olympic decathlon in 1948 at age seventeen and again in 1952, grew up in Tulare, and the high school stadium bears his name.
